Let's get some misconceptions out of the way..
|
|
I just want to say that I started watching Witch Hunter Robin on the completely wrong foot. First, there was Hershell (from anime club) telling me that NO WAY could Amon and Robin hook up, they were brother and sister; and then, there was stupid Alex telling me that his favorite char (which we deduced to be Miho) was killed, at the end.
Needless to say, neither was true. (and my enjoyment would have been soooo much higher if i had known, i mean, you see the part where Amon saves Robin and their faces are like, 2 inches apart and then you go .... "AAAHHHHH NOOOOO")
I would say that in all, its a pretty good series. Provided you watch episode 1, and then 12 --> 26. Basically, this otherwise nice anime is pulled down by two things. 1) episodes 2-11, what some ppl might call "monster of the week" eps, and 2) "the .hack//sign syndrome", which is, pointless plot meandering that serves provide only one vital piece of information each episode, forcing you to watch all of it. oh and, beautiful ppl standing around talking about irrelevant things. the plot suffered tremendously thanks to both, and the fact that amon x robin was not emphasized as much as i would have liked. i mean, the two don't see each other for practically 10 episodes!!
as for character development, at least the Useless Eps did develop Amon and Robin pretty well, but my beef is saved for Michael. I was like, kewwwwlll, you hacked into STN-J, but then all of a sudden he's all like "gosh, i finally left my hole cuz i figured it wasn't safe and i wanna be strong like robin!!!" worst line i have ever seen. period.
as for my favorite character, i don't really have one. seriously. if i had to choose, it would be amon, b/c he's nice eye candy, but that's it. i kinda like sakaki, but he's too minor, and doujima's too annoying, miho's too mature, and ... yeah.
So i had a really bad headache today and i got nothing done again, as usual. i feel really guilty cuz i didnt check my email yesterday so i didnt know that i missed an appointment today for this internship thingie, now i'm nervous, AHHH NO, and i didnt do ANY SAT II STUDYING, even worse AAAHHHHHH NO, and look at my abuse of the bold button. at least i'm on compie less than belinda ...

Report cards should be banned

Bottom line: my GPA was (theoretically) better last semester than this semester. Why, you ask?
last semester I had three "bad borderline" grades, meaning with a tip in the right direction i could have gotten .1 higher of a gpa. this semester, only one "bad borderline" which the difference is too negligible for me to actually figure out.
alas, for the two exams that actually counted, i bombed both. or persay, i did not reach any of my goals. i was ONE QUESTION AWAY from getting my goal in physics; unfortunately, i only have a 92 b/c i missed one extra question on my exam. However, the saddest part of this is my grade in precal. i will omit what i got. lets just say that talking to meera right afterwards was rather depressing, and the fact that jesse kao beat me was also depressing. the important thing is, i was way off my mark. i am so lucky to be getting a 93 in that class.
so anyhoo~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
today i went out w/ my anime club (brandon, kimiko, and una). fun stuff. we went to china town first, discovered kimiko actually speaks chinese too (*green with envy, i wanna know jap*) so that was kinda fun. i dont actually follow everything she says, but that's my fault. eh heh. we went to this restaurant in chinatown, and guess what lin was there. hehehehehhe.
after which, we went to this lollycup-ish place across the street and kimiko and brandon got stuffs. good stuff. mango over strawberry. anyhoo.
then we went to that lasertrek place, and brandon bought this do as infinity cd which has good songs. mellow amber! something about rain! week! woowheee!
then we went to watch a movie, at the dollar theatre (50 cent! 50 cent!) and it was 50 first dates which was actually REALLY GOOD. very very good. i would watch it again.
then i went home. the end.

so i wanted to blab about some things earlier, but i really cant rmr cept for like one thing, and it is this. i dont like it when ppl say "i hate china". i mean, i know they're not saying "i hate -you-", but it basically amounts to the same thing b/c hello, i am chinese, and i do (somewhat) support the government. or actually, what i should say is that i'm mostly ambivalent to the government (admittedly, there are good and bad aspects) and this is my beef with the world. i dont understand really why ppl are soo against communism and (or perhaps because of) china because its not the government, but the ruler, that screws you over (mostly). and i'll readily admit that china' government has many problems, but overall, it has GOTTEN BETTER. esp since the death of that dead dude, mao ze dong. which admittedly, his "cultural revolution" thing was way off his rocker.
but anyhoo.
just b/c hong kong went under the control of china does not mean that everyday life will suddenly become screwed over. in fact, based on what i last learned, hong kong ppl get to keep most aspects of their previous government. in fact, the chinese government promised no changes (altho there are prolly some).
to me, its like the whole civil war thing in the history book. the south liked black ppl on an individual basis, but hated the race as a whole. (the north, vice versa.) at least, symbolically speaking, i feel like that individual "black". while my friends may like me as a person, they hate the chinese. i personally feel like its an affront on me, altho i prolly shouldnt.

I really really really really need a calendar.

I went to the NTYHS meeting this morning; I have concluded that i need to organize lots of things. While going thru my school stuff, I found out I lost some (semi-important) papers so i have to go request copies; plus forgot to return some papers etc so gotta get that down. so much for doing my precal review today eh? ^^;
so my summer situation doesn't look that bad ... i'll prolly be accepted into the callier institute, which looks really, really, nice. i wonder if my alumni connections would help in tipping the scale (if that were neccessary) ...
i finished the psat stuff. took hella long time to decide 2 colleges, intended major, and career choice. final: duke (OF COURSE!! man i <3 that place) and unexpectedly, harvey mudd. i was looking at the stats (in my 351 best colleges book) and i surprisingly ... still love it. and the admissions rate is 37%, lotsa pts for that. teehee! ^^ i'mma going into biochem, and my intended career is health. i thought about it, i actually like being a doctor, other than the whole money issue.
so yes ... i need a calendar...

I can die happy. Blogger has comments; no need to be looking at xanga anymore (hah!).
So this can just be my purge entry. heh ...
I'm really really worried about my French grade. I'm not too clear as to my last two six weeks' averages, and I was barely pulling a 90 last time I looked, and with the recent Etrangere stuff ... well let's just say I better not be getting lower than an 88. Just to be safe.
I was worried about English as well; well actually I still am but w/e. I'm positive I'm getting an 80 something, doesn't help with that crappy film proj and my really really bad persuasive essay (i hate writing eng essays) and well my last two test grades were only "so-so"; acceptable under ordinary circumstances but here ... but really I dont care anymore. So what if I get two Bs (see above) this six weeks, my average in English will still work out to be in the 90-92 range as long as I get 85+. And I -know- I'm above that. (i tried figuring it out, and there is no way i can get a 93 for sem avg unless i pull a 93 now ... fat chance.)
as for my other classes, like precalc, I run a risky chance of getting a 96 for semester (like the freaking @#$# last one!! ><) as well as borderline in like half my other classes (you dont think something like this happens, just see my last semester. made a diff of .1 GPA!!!!!!!!!) i got my 4.8 for APUSH, French is scary, precalc is iffy, comp sci is (unfortunately) only 4.8, english is 4.6 (*sigh*), and physics ... well. physics.
And on to the extracurricular ...
I still hate NHS, btw.
I wasn't elected for FNHS, but then, I'm kind of indifferent. I would have liked to be in a situation like Helen, but unfortunately we run an equal vote kind of thing and I was running against Laura Schwartz, who has only been officer for French for like, the last 3 years running. yeah, I'm really going to win. Well, at least I tried. At least anadita lost. Hah! Like you were gonna win when u were up there talking about how 'enthusiastic' you were in that boring tone! (private vendetta, no one mind >.>)
I was rejected by the Hughes Science thing (wow that was fast!) but seeing as there were only 70 applicants (accept only 15 people) ... actually I never thought I'd make it any way, what with me actually not being you know ... all science-fair and all. *sigh* it would have been nice.
And to top it off, SAT.
Well, I can die happy if it was only my writing. My writing rocked, btw. I suddenly realized how easy it is. 800, baby!
About my french and ushistory. Well. I did better on both of them then I ever did on the practice tests (with the exception of that 760 French ....ha. ha. ha.) I am seriously considering taking the French again. a 660 is pathetic; I know I can do better. I don't know how I'll study, but I will. See? I can live that down. I'm taking it again. Definitely!
but the saddest thing ever, is my apush. I got a 690. I mean, cmon guys, just -TEN- more pts right? *sigh* what i wouldn't give to get one more pt right ... i cant wait to get that sheet back and tear out my hair. (imagination: "AGHHHHH!!! WTF!!! I MISSED A QUESTION ON CIVIL RIGHTS?!")
and the cherry on top: summer plans.
Seeing as that I've been rejected to every thing that I've applied to so far, I can only hope that the two people I contacted at UTD can get me placed for some sort of lab work thing for the summer. *prays* (btw. cheers to iris ^.~) I actually have to go in and make an appt with this one really respectable guy and I dont think i'll make it then. I dont know, all these rejections have suddenly made me have a very low opinion of myself; on the bright side, I'm becoming somewhat callous to them.
I havent gotten a job, and I should, dammit.

All because of this: A-Kon.
It started so innocently.
B/c of anime and Brandon's all knowing ness, we wanted to go to A-Kon (do a group thing) but only like 5 of us were able to. Thanks to that Evil Testing Serpent that some people like to call the SATs (FREAKING @#$@#^%#$^&!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I had to study June 4, take them June 5 (and plus there was Alex's bday party), and then fly to China June 6. Actually, I wasn't that pissed, figured, hey, I can go next year.
Then...
I FOUND OUT DO AS INFINITY WAS GOING TO BE THERE.
To clarify, I should say that Do As Infinity ranks on the top 3 list of Japanese bands/singers that I worship (the other two slots occupied by Utada Hikaru and Ayumi Hamasaki; I don't count BoA since she's Korean in origin). I have made a wallpaper of the lead singer, Van Tomiko, and have actually used it for several months. I know half of the lyrics to Fukai Mori and Shinjitsu no Uta/Shi (have to love those karaoke Inu Yasha endings), which is more than I can say for any other japanese songs. In short, I adore them.
but thanks to the FREAKING SATs (which i have to freaking study for) it looks like i wont be able to make the friday concert date, which is only 35 bucks and it looks like the only time that DAI is gonna perform.
i forgot to mention that this is DAI's first US performance.
Pissed? Check.

long awaited template here ... "summer fling". i would honestly blab about it, cept i'm too tired. first, i tried tabulas, which i thought had this nifty image gallery feature, but the only thing it has over snapfish is it doesn't resize all ur images over 480 px in either direction. in fact, its worse in the fact that it can't deal with the html for the images, which was generated by adobe photoshop so i know it CANT be wrong. to see: click here.

i'm really depressed right now, cuz i just got back an email that i didnt get into that comp sci program at austin. somehow, i feel like its a personal affront to my abilities or something, because i can only imagine i wasn't as good. maybe i just didn't do enough extracurricular? what? *sigh* so now i have nothing except the hughes thing; which, if i make, i will laugh, because i just KNOW that some kid who has won 60 science fairs will beat me. so now i have nothing for the summer, and i'm panicking. big time. i suppose i could always pick up a job, but where? how? i should call graciela. hmmm ...
plus, i took my english and french AP exams today so i separately feel like shit in that corner too. jeez...
[edit] ok well maybe its not that bad after all, i did apply for that internship with jso solutions, which is apparently some exclusive thing open to ntyhs/oca members. maybe ... just -maybe- ... i can get in...

and the escaflowne movie ...
|

(i feel the need to vent about how i spent 6 and 1/2 hours dling this piece of crap.)
this sums it up nicely:

what can i say, i thought the animation was top notch, the music was top notch, BUT ...
the plot sucked major. i mean, it is incredibly not plausible that in the course of 2 days that movie hitomi should progress from sad, disillusioned, depressed girl that she is into this "hope! at last!" type deal AND fall deeply in love with kindred spirit van in the first place. plus, she seems to snuggle up to him mighty fast, considering she's calling his name without honorics by the first 24 hours she reaches gaea. (and that guys, is a biggg deal in japan.) it also seems implausible that van would fall in love with her. although, from my pov, it seemed like it was more her falling in love with him.
the other prob with the plot is that it starts off great (that was an excellent start to the movie) but then tapers off to depressed ppl comforting each other. OK, and why in the world did Hitomi suddenly start "wanting to be with Van" after like, they have one conversation? and well he protected her, but that was his job. c'mon, ppl. man, who created this plot???
As the review says: "One minute, Hitomi is innocent and naive, and the next, she's pledging her life to Van in a longwinded speech that not even Hallmark would use in their cards."
the incredible amts of plot bunnies that were stuck in here but not developed disappointed me greatly. like, what the heck he was doing on earth in a freaking train station when she was young. that was sooo underdeveloped. ("oh, he looks like that guy from the train station... " and that's the end of that.)
the only compensation was the art and music. music, interestingly, was good to listen to (i cringe at tv show esca's ending theme, but ppl say its good. ><) i esp like the song sung by the fortune teller girl. that was good. the art was -superb-. i love the retakes on all the characters, plus the horses actually look normal now. allen was surprisingly sexy for having been changed so much. look at that muscle <3 <3 <3 but nehoo. millerna looked sluttish (and drastically diff from the show) and folken looked like he had one of those powerpuff things on his head. way too fuzzy. oh, i liked dilandau. his trenchcoat deal = tres magnifique. merle finally hit puberty, and gades recieved a nice makeover.

in other news, i hate french. i have spent way too much time, and i now have a vocab list exceeding 150 new words. its not right.

Today I officially declare the start of The French Project in which I will immerse myself in French through reading French manga (have started on Good Morning Call, a series I already know the plot of to lessen the pain) listening to French music (see title ^^ - song from Am�lie, only the best piano song from the best French film EVAR) and uh ... studying for French AP exam. yes. *nods enthusiastically*
about the music: "Warning: will make you want to learn the accordion, wear cute clothes, go traipsing around France, and have a charmed life." from a customer review of the soundtrack
currently dling: the last episode of escaflowne (the long awaited end ... ah yes ... kyaaaa) and the escaflowne movie. felt a bit like indulging in ogm superiority, so i'm dling cowboy bebop. (speaking of ... this is like, the 4th week that alex hasnt given those to me ... watch me burn wolf's rain now ... yes that is a threat)
and i forgot to mention, i finished outlaw star, i rmr complaining earlier about the kei pirates and crap ... i take it all back. its more like a delayed reaction, but everything comes back full circle once again. plus, some of the character development was incredible. like the one with jim x hanmyo ... so cute^^ yet incredibly sad. its like that ganemede elegy episode in cowboy bebop. good stuff.
i also read a review of OS that said that hilda x gene would have made a better couple than melfina x gene, and i gotta agree. the first would have been so much more exciting ... not that the last one is bad. mel's really cute, and it shows gene's good side (however little there is). oh, and i like fred luo. XD
one last thing ... i really really liked harry mcdougall. you think he's all creepy and slimy and stuff, but he's just misunderstood. i was really really sad at the end, b/c even tho he's sorta dead his personality lives on. (too hard to extrapolate) if i could chose a favorite char, it would be him.
i took the sat iis this morning, and maybe my mind went numb, but i actually think i did well. not as good as the 760 on french yesterday of course, but the hist was a lot easier, the french a bit harder, and i could actually write about the sat ii writing topic. maybe in 2 weeks, i will be able to see my grades without flinching.

back to The French Project and studying for: french/english AP exams, physics test, CS AP, and much much more ...

p.s. alex asked me to make him a layout for his blog and i seriously toyed with the idea of using pink ... it would be SO appropriate. *evil grin*
