Ups and Downs

I invite you, the reader, to rate the two major happenings in my life this week. We will call this new segment "New high or new low?" after my favorite phrase that I learned from textsfromlastnight.com.
1) Cute restaurant owner (age: 31) who has been in China for over 7 years, has a passing grasp of Chinese, otherwise decent looking, etc, asks me for my number following a flirtation. Later, find out he is married with two kids, ages 1 and 5. New high or new low?
2) Female student invites me to go watch her brother's basketball finals or something like that. Later, informs me that she told her brother about me and is basically trying to set us up. New high or new low?
Discuss.

Fashion blogging
|
|
I've been doing a fair amount of following of le fashion blogs recently (and really, by "fair" I mean I find one that I like and then obsessively read ALL THE FREAKING ARCHIVES, an OCD habit of mine that has rendered lots of time lost), and it has become rather clear to me that I have started recognizing certain names and labels and their characteristics. This usually happens when I'm looking at two or three different sites at once and I start noticing the same brand/person being mentioned on all two or three pages. Whether this is good or bad is debatable. Observe:
Names/faces: -Carmen Kass: major league supermodel; of course she's blond. Was apparently in Zoolander. -Kate Lanphear (and related names, like Taylor Tomasi): someone somewhere called her and her goonies the league of the "editrix." She is the editor-in-chief of some major publication (either Elle or Vogue Paris, honestly can't remember) and apparently is super fashonable. Love object of The Sartorialist (major time street style photographer). -Garance Dore: major time street style photographer; she does some really pretty photos of women; photos tend to look ethereal. Dating The Sartorialist. (So yeah, in addition to names, I'm now up on my gossip too.) Was involved with some custom shirts created by Celine recently, as a result of some special invite to a Gap store opening, in France, I think. (Turns out, I know her CV too)
Labels: -Guiseppe Zanotti: I seriously cannot get away from that damned pair of fierce looking jagged edge pair of heels of his these days -Proenza Schouler: Well, I do love their new collection ... and their shoes ... and their bags ... -Pamela Claw: No clue, except apparently she makes offbeat, animal inspired jewelry -Nicholas Kirkwood: BEST. SHOES. EVER. PERIOD. Currently close to replacing Louboutin in my heart.
I think I need some help. :<

Noodles n UFOs n Blacks, oh my!
|
|
I gave my kids a homework assignment that involved them writing their English name, Chinese name, and class, followed by 1 sentence on what they ate this holiday, 1 sentence on who they met/saw, and 1 sentence on something else that happened (subject could not start with "I"). I encourage my classes to be creative, as I gave higher points to those that wrote more and who wrote stories.
These are their stories. Or rather, Kevin's story.
(dun dun! a la Law and Order)
I have left the following unedited and in its raw form except where I bolded the best part (that's right, Kevin wrote this entire thing in this GIANT block of non-paragraphed text)
Hello, dear Cathy. My name is 何志鹏 and my English name is Kevin. But I’d like you to call me何志鹏.Because I like my motherland very much! I am in the class of 09 inter trade A.You see, last holiday is the mid-autumn festival when our Chinese usually get together to celebrate the moon.THE mid-autumn festival as one of the chinese traditional holiday, people usually eat mooncakes to celebrate it.So I did! Last holiday I ate mooncakes, Dumpling, noodles and some cake. One thing I specially want to tell you is that the Dumpling and noodles were made by hand not by mechine so it ’s much Delicious than the one in the shop .Wow! I could’nt stop from eating them up ! I saw a UFO during the holiday.I saw two saucermen got out from the UFO.The two saucermen said they came to invite me to vist their Planet for my outstanding.I asked them whether there were beautiful girls in their planet. But them replyed there weren’t any one.So I refused them and felt sorry about it.Then we said goodbye to each other. My aunt asked me to celebrate with them in Shanghai.I was agreed. When my aunt my aunt showed to visit Shanghai, many Foreigners were also visiting Shanghai, too. It’s the first time I saw so many Foreigners and I wondered why the blacks’ skin were so black, but their teeth were so white.these Foreigner all took a camerar with them.Maybe they have lost themselves in Shanghai’ beautiful Scenery!
